Survey Overview and Purpose
  • The HYS has been conducted since 2002, with participation growing to over 215,000 youth annually.
  • It assesses youth well-being, social relationships, mental health, substance use, and injury risks, guiding community policies and programs.
  • Participation is voluntary; students can skip questions or opt out without penalty, engaging in alternative activities if they choose not to participate.

  • Topics cover demographics, school feelings, relationships, health behaviors, and safety.  Parents can review questions online.
  • Individual responses are confidential, with no names or identifying codes collected, and data stored securely.
Use of Results
  • Results inform schools, districts, and public health agencies for service provision, grant writing, and policy planning.
  • Reports are shared publicly, while datasets are available to approved users through a data-sharing agreement.
